180 students studying at the University of Tasmania’s Sandy Bay campus will be housed in Royal Wolf’s 3-bedroom shipping container accommodation units from January 2020. The 12m x 3m units will accommodate those students who applied to live in university-owned housing, and are a welcome addition to the city, which has been struggling with an ongoing shortage of private rental housing.
After hearing about the university’s accommodation shortage, Royal Wolf proposed a practical 60-unit accommodation solution that was both cost and space effective — stacking containers to allow for more units. This significant project demonstrated Royal Wolf’s capacity to deliver bespoke modifications and projects of scale within a very tight time frame. The accommodation units are arranged in four blocks, each with their own enclosed walkway and are located behind the heritage-listed Christ College adjacent to John Fisher College on College Rd, Sandy Bay.
Situated on a raised piece of land, the units required thorough planning and engineering expertise to ensure a safe and successful build and installation. The 60 units each comprise of three bedrooms fitted with a king single bed, a television, a small fridge, a cupboard and an ensuite, with split-system air conditioning. The accommodation facility also includes communal common rooms and laundry facilities.
