Contract mining is the latest in a line of industries to see the traditional shipping container transformed into an innovative business solution with the completion of a unique two-story workshop facility in Whyalla, South Australia. Partnering with BGC Contracting, one of the country’s major open pit mining contractors, Royal Wolf was tasked with the design and delivery of a new modular workshop that would help support the operations of the Whyalla-based mine site, specifically providing the ability to conduct all-weather maintenance on mining dump trucks.
The unique project resulted in the creation of a double-height containerised building made from 14 individually fitted-out units, each 40 foot long, and housing one office, five workshops, three storage spaces and a lubrication distribution centre. Custom stairs and cantilevered walkways were installed to deliver accessibility and three loading docks were decked out with pivot gates to allow for goods to be easily packed in the storage containers. CEO of Royal Wolf, Robert Allan, said the completion of this facility to the highest standard builds on an already strong relationship with BGC Contracting and the mining industry more broadly.
“This is the first time BGC has commissioned a project like this to be constructed. The clients specific requirements were met by our team to deliver the ideal container solution,” said Mr Allan. “The facility foot print measures 27 metres long, 18 metres wide and 15 metres high and was completed in just three months, in line with the client’s schedule and expectations.
