It’s been 14 years since Royal Wolf first threw its support behind the Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride, and the national shipping container company will be there again this year.
The popular bike ride, which raises funds for the Children’s Cancer Institute, has raised more than $6.6 million since it began in 1999. This year, organisers hope to raise more than $300,000 to help change the future of kids with cancer.
Royal Wolf is supporting this year’s event, which runs from 28-30 July, with the free hire of two 20-foot high cube containers for two and a half weeks to cover pre and post-event needs.
“Having access to the containers at no cost means we can keep our registration fees down, which increases the number of riders who can participate and therefore means we have more people raising money, so the dollar value that goes to the Children’s Cancer Institute will be higher,” says Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride Incorporated president Patrick Sutton.
Every rider raises a minimum of $500, which goes directly to the Children’s Cancer Institute. Any funds left over from registration fees are also donated.
“We’re the biggest fundraiser for the Children’s Cancer Institute,” says Patrick.
More than 200 people of all fitness levels and all walks of life, such as businesspeople, tradies and neurosurgeons, have registered for the 2022 ride, with groups based on fitness levels set up to ensure everyone’s safety.
Beginning at the Mercure Inn on Woolcock Street in Townsville and ending at the Cairns Showgrounds, riders will cover 352 kilometres over three days.
The two Royal Wolf containers will accompany riders along their journey and carry important supplies, including bedding and change of clothes, to ensure riders and support staff have everything they need.
“A lot of the riders stay in Innisfail and Ingham on the way up, so all their swags, bedding, bags and suitcases are carried up in the containers and then opened up so they can grab their gear and set themselves up when they arrive,” says Patrick.
“On the way back, the containers are packed with bikes to bring back home to Townsville.”
Royal Wolf Regional Sales Manager Michael Meyer is pleased the containers will be put to good use.
“The fact our containers will carry vital supplies for riders and help to keep costs low so more money can be raised for an incredible cause is fantastic,” he says.
“Seeing children suffer is awful. That’s why we see this as an important event - we love supporting events that can really help to make a difference.
“Royal Wolf isn’t just about servicing customers. We’re committed to being part of the community and contributing in meaningful ways.” Royal Wolf is proud to continue its long-running sponsorship of the Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride, and strengthen its connection to the local Queensland communities.
The Children’s Cancer Institute is recognised internationally as a leader in childhood cancer research and is the only independent medical research institute in Australia that is wholly dedicated to research into the causes, prevention and cure of childhood cancer.
The institute’s aim is to save the lives of all children with cancer and eliminate their suffering.
