Queensland Fire and Rescue firefighters can now be prepared to tackle dangerous and hazardous situations thanks to a new state-of-the-art training centre constructed from shipping containers in Townsville.
Australasia’s largest shipping container provider, Royal Wolf, has transformed six containers for the Woodlands Fire Training Facility to create a unique unit that will increase firefighter’s capacity to rescue in the event of an incident. The facility consists of three 40 foot and two 20 foot containers stacked three high and fitted with stairs, safety rails, windows, shutters and bollards to form a multi-functional training resource. Firefighters are put through their paces and experience confined space training in the dark with container interiors painted black.
They also undertake abseiling exercises off the top of the structure from a specially designed platform. An additional container forms the ‘cobra’ component of the facility, used for high powered water jet cutting and extinguishment training. As firefighters are required to blast holes through steel, bricks and glass, Royal Wolf has modified the unit so damaged components can be easily replaced. The container also had its roof reinforced to accommodate one tonne concrete slabs for search and rescue operations.
