MAKING LARVAE: ROYAL WOLF HELPS FLYFARM QUEENSLAND PRODUCE SUSTAINABLE FOOD SOURCE

PRODUCING SUSTAINABLY
FlyFarm Queensland grows larvae of the black soldier fly, which is used to produce a high-protein insect powder as a more sustainable alternative to the popular fishmeal. The powder is an ingredient in feedstock for fish, such as barramundi and salmon, as well as cats and dogs.
“We coordinate the entire larval cycle here onsite, from egg through to pupate,” says Claire Nock, Technical Manager at FlyFarm Queensland. “Hatchlings are cared for in a nursery from one to five days, and subsequently they are reared in a grow-out space until 14-16 days. At this stage, the mature larvae are machine separated and subject to post-harvest processing.
“The final product is a whole dried insect, which undergoes further refining to either a wholemeal or defatted meal, with insect oil and frass (feed residue) as valuable by-products.”
ROYAL WOLF KEEPS PRODUCT FRESH
FlyFarm Queensland has two hired Royal Wolf containers on-site – a 20-foot extra wide and tall refrigerated container for product storage and a site office.
“The refrigerated container assists to preserve the quality of both our inbound and outbound products, and the fact that we were able to obtain a container that is extra tall and wide to accommodate a forklift is fantastic,” says Claire Nock.
Royal Wolf staff assisted Claire in finding the right solution for FlyFarm Queensland’s needs and provided guidance on preparing for the arrival of the containers.
“I called around to numerous companies and Royal Wolf stood out with the highest standard of customer service,” she says. “They returned my calls and follow-up enquiries promptly and personally, and I felt well-informed and certain about the product of choice.
“When the containers arrived, unloading was quick and easy. We had some besser blocks that Royal Wolf had suggested, which levelled the container well when set down.”

With a large factory on-site but no refrigeration or office facilities, Royal Wolf has filled in the gaps to ensure FlyFarm Queensland’s operations run efficiently.
“We’ve been able to provide them with a mini-HQ,” says Alicia McPhillips, Business Development Manager at Royal Wolf. “The office is fully decked out with vinyl floors, air conditioning and everything they need.”
